SCCC Ride-A-Metric (RAM) Training Series

Rules for Safe Traffic Cycling

  1. Ride on the right side of the road, never on the left or on the sidewalk.
  2. Use proper lane positions. Never hug the curb. Position yourself further left when you wish for cars to be more deliberate in passing you. You may need to "take the lane" to prevent cars from passing you on hills and other dangerous spots.
  3. Since you are a vehicle on the road you need to use hand signals to identify your intentions at turns. Keep in mind that the middle finger is not a valid hand signal.
  4. Ride a straight line on the road; avoid weaving around in the lane. When changing position in the traffic lane, make sure that your new position is clear of other cyclists and vehicles.
  5. Position yourself appropriately when approaching an intersection. Avoid blocking right turn lanes when going straight and use the left turn lane when appropriate.
  6. Try not to run stop signs and red lights, but if you do, be considerate of those who didn't and wait up for them. Point out obstacles on the road. This is done by pointing at general location of obstacles or by saying "hole", "gravel", etc.
  7. Indicate changes in riding pace by saying "slowing", "stopping", etc. Indicate upcoming turns to other riders. Make these communications loud enough for all to hear.
  8. Never overlap wheels with other riders. Be aware of, but do not become focused, on the wheel in front of you. Look further up the road to maintain awareness of the road.
  9. Indicate to other riders that you are passing by saying "on your left" or "on your right". This is especially important if you are passing on the right side, as other riders may not expect that.
  10. Ride no more than two abreast.
  11. Ride single file in heavy traffic or if someone desires to pass.
  12. Do not ride on aero bars in a group. It endangers you and all of the group
